Routine maintenance on your car is important. Making sure your oil is clean and that you have the correct amount will prevent some serious situations. An oil change seems like such a simple thing that it can be postponed, but it is far more important than that. Oil in the engine keeps everything lubricated, and some oils even help clean carbon deposits. Keep reading for more information on oil changes, and what an oil change from us includes.
Without ensuring that your oil is fresh, it will gradually lose its viscosity and turn into a jelly like consistency. While this is an extreme case scenario, it could be important to note that if this were to happen, your engine could seize up. It is essentially the same as a stroke. A blood clot clogs and stops the blood flow in the brain, causing significant and sometimes irreparable damage. Likewise, your engine will have permanent damage. You could be paying hundreds of dollars on car repairs, and possibly even thousands if you need a new engine altogether.
The good news is that such an event is easy to prevent! It’s as simple as getting regular oil changes. “Regular” is considered to be about every 3,000 miles. However, it all depends on your vehicle and driving habits.
If your driving trips are typically less than 10 miles at a time, you should consider changing your oil more often than every 3,000 miles. This is because condensation builds up in the system with basic use. This condensation causes a faster breakdown of the engine oil. If you are not driving at high speeds for long intervals of time, the oil will not become hot enough to burn off the condensation. Simplified, even if your driving trips are short and/or infrequent, you should still get an oil change at least twice a year.
If your car is fairly new and your drives are usually 20 minutes or more with fairly steady speeds, you are more likely to be able to go longer between changes. In fact, some car manuals actually recommend changes at intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. However, if you drive more like the scenario above, it is probably better to stick with 3,000 mile changes.
Older vehicles are sometimes referred to as “oil burners,” meaning they go through oil faster than most. This is typically because of the valve seals or cylinder head gasket leaks, among other things. As these parts get older, the likelihood of them malfunctioning increases. These malfunctions often result in oil leaking into the combustion chamber and burning off, along with a few other effects that can cause the loss or burning of oil.
In addition, older vehicles are more likely to have slow oil leaks. If you have an older vehicle, it is important that you check your oil levels regularly. For these vehicles, should avoid waiting past 3,000 miles for an oil change.
